Linux continues to answer the call

As I wrote a while ago I’ve been using Linux 100% now, no more Windows for work. Things have been going well since the switch and even though Wine won’t run a few apps I need Windows for work provides terminal services for access.

Every week their seems to be something new when it comes to supporting applications at work. That is not suppose to be my main job these days but when the phone rings it’s hard to say “sorry call Support”. So when the question came yesterday, “what does this cryptic error message mean other than the xml data is bad”, I turned again to open source software to provide an answer.

At first I thought it was odd being asked to trouble shoot an issue this way but I’m always up for a challenge. So to answer the question I needed to validate the data against the xml schema. The schema I did not have, those who were asking the question did … which is why I thought it was odd. So I asked for the schema and set off to find a tool to do the validation. Most browsers today will parse xml which is very helpful to identify illeal characters and tags that aren’t closed. However validating against schema is another story.

After some googling and checking both Screem and Geany, as I use both, I came across MLView. A simple little gui that can create, modify and validate xml documents. It installed in 30 seconds and a minute after that I had my answer. BTW -Their was nothing wrong with the data it was the transport.

It’s refreshing to know that solutions to problems are but a click away where in many instances others have already created something to meet the same challenge. The web is a wonderful tool, open source makes it that much better.

Weekend yardwork

With this weekend being a long one it was a good opportunity to get back to some yard work. Kay reminded me today it has been a year since we started working on the shrubs in the front yard. How true if we look back to this post and these pics. But their was seven shrubs all of them about six feet tall. Not sure how much dirt the boxes they where in held but I gave up on moving it to other parts of the yard with the wheel barrel yesterday. I’ll leave it for who comes in to fill the holes in with concrete.

With the shrubs out of the way moved on to the area next to the drive that has a big bush and a tree that had a number of plants around it. It was also framed by landscaping timbers which we took out some time ago. Started to use the rest of the wall blocks to frame it and stopped after half way. Kay needed to add some hostas and I’ll need more blocks anyway. By 1:00pm it was pretty warm so I called it a day. We may finish up tomorrow but we’re heading to the Renaissance Festival with friends so if not it will be there next weekend.

Here is a small slide show with three five pics of the work.

Update – 5/28: Finshed up the accent blocks around the tree in the front this evening before going to hockey. Now we can work on planting some flowers in front of the blocks.

Server upgrade

Yesterday my host Dixie Internet Systems migrated the server this site is on to a new one. Unfortunately I didn’t catch it till late last night. They notified my on Firday about the details but I didn’t get to checking as soon as I should have. So it’s very possible some emails got rejected between 12:00pm and sometime early this morning. If that’s the case please resend emails to myself or Kay.

Everything is working again. Sorry for the inconvenience.
