Work, play, rest

This past week has been busy as I was back in IL for work, came home a little early as the battery went out in Kay’s car, then off to Huntsville for a hockey tournament. I left for IL last Sunday and was in the office on Monday morning. Was there through Thursday but left sooner than expected as Kay called bright and early as her car wouldn’t start, battery was dead. I headed back later that morning to pick her up from work and install a new battery, in hopes that was the only problem. It seems to be.

Friday afternoon it was off to Huntsville, AL for the annual Rocket City Hockey Tournament. I’ve been lucky to play the last three years and had a great time again. We played in the championship game Sunday afternoon, against another Nashville team, but lost. We spent all our energy the game before that morning and had nothing left, it was still a fun time.

I’m now back to playing catch up, which includes getting the back rested. Last Saturday, while family was in for CMA Music Fest, I decided to take some landscaping stones back to the store. Unfortunately for me when picking a couple up the back said nope !!!. It took me 15 minutes to get back inside and I was in bed most of the morning. Couldn’t get out without pulling my knees to 90 degrees and rolling sideways. By the evening I could move around a little, but had to pass on the CMA activities. It has been getting better every day and taking a week off from hockey should help.

Weekend stuff

The parents came down over the weekend and wanted to see our hockey and volleyball games. Don’t ask me why, mine are not that entertaining but it’s good family time. So flickr is updated if you want to grin a little at the pics. The feed for the tag is here.

Of course we needed a project too so it was fix the garage door and try some screens out for the gutters. Garage door is ten times better (noise) than before and once we get some rain can check on the screens. It would be good to not clean gutters again.

A hockey weekend

Friday I left for Huntsville, AL for the Benton Wilcoxon Ice Complex and a hockey tournament. This was the second year I’ve gone with some guys from one of the leagues I’ve played in here in Nashville. Four games between Friday evening and Sunday morning, haning out at the hotel and havin a few beers with the guys. This year the competition was not so good but then again we did play in the novice group, more like where I was a few years ago. But none the less it was a load of fun and with a league game on Sunday evening that put me at five games in 48 hours. Thank goodness the wife doesn’t mind.

7 point night

I’m greatful every day I can get on the ice and play some hockey. The two leagues I play in are filled with guys who have played high school, college, minor league and yes even NHL level… but most of us are just regular old guys who want to keep playing. For me I feel lucky that after playing for only five years they let me skate with them.

So on a rare occasion the planets align and a good game comes alone. Most of the time I’m on defense which suits me just fine but I will play forward from time to time… Wednesday night was one of those. Four goals and three assists in a 13 – 1 win for us, Labatts. Those games are fun and make up for the others where we are on the other end.

Hazards of mens league hockey

For those of you who know me ice hockey has become a passion and is my main source of excercise. Playing anywhere from two to four times a week it is a great substitute for a gym membership, althought I’m not sure if it’s saving me any money. A good example is last night, our scheduled game turned into pick up after the opposing team could not field five players and a goalie. So since we are all there we just through sticks and played for fun.

Unfortunately playing for fun can get you in just as much trouble as playing in a real game. I know this case I’ve badly sprained an ankle twice in pickup but have never really been hurt in a game. Last night added another noch on the belt when it comes to what bad things can happen on the ice. A puck off the ankle put me on the ice for a few minutes. Of course shots like that sting at first and then calm down. This one was the same accept I did not expect having trouble getting out of the truck when I got home. And now this morning it is getting bigger by the hour. I have not been to the doc yet but he doesn’t need to tell me, it’s broke.

I’ll vist him this afternoon and will know for sure. Looks like I’ll be on the bench for a few weeks, lets just hope it heals quickly.
