Weekend stuff

The parents came down over the weekend and wanted to see our hockey and volleyball games. Don’t ask me why, mine are not that entertaining but it’s good family time. So flickr is updated if you want to grin a little at the pics. The feed for the tag is here.

Of course we needed a project too so it was fix the garage door and try some screens out for the gutters. Garage door is ten times better (noise) than before and once we get some rain can check on the screens. It would be good to not clean gutters again.

Our first snow

First snow of 07

The weather men have been warning us snow could be on the way but you never believe it till you see it. Kids in some counties have been out of school for a few days but that’s mainly for the flew bug, not the weather. Last night they got it right and we had our first snow of 07. A handful of photos are on the flikr feed, see them all here.

Never thought I’d use my busted snow shovel again but sure enough today was the day. Did a little on the steps before work and took care of the drive and back porch at lunch. Not to bad time wise, about 20 minutes, but when it’s only a half inch a good broom will do.

Roads have now melted and I’m sure it will be gone in a few days as the temp will be in the 30’s over the weekend. Nothing like it was in IL back in the day. But I can do without shoveling a foot off the drive. If it would ever come to that I think I’d either have the neighbor kids come over or just take the truck and make a lane !!!!

An open phone, I like

FIC Neo1973

Ever since Trolltech annouced the Greenphone I’ve been waiting for a linux based phone to come to the US, one that also had viable PDA functions. Their are already a number of Linux based phones but most are only available in Asian markets. Motorola seems to be the biggest player we see moving in this direction. So the other day when I ran across an upcoming release from FIC of OpenMoko.

This article gives details on what should be available in February 2007. I’m curious to see what comes across the announce list after reading this post. Their has been some comparison to the IPhone too. But GSM always gets the good stuff first hopefully a CDMA capable version will be available later this year otherwise I may need to look into switching carriers.

Switching carriers may be worth it if I can get rid of the SL-5500 at the same time. But then their is also the Nokia N880 almost to cool pass up…. but I don’t do Internet phone yet, still work from home and only chat a small percentage of the day. But you never know when things will change.

Nano in the new year

Nano

The new year came and went without much excitement. Had a handful of friends over for a kid friendly evening and only a few fireworks around the neighborhood, which is nice.

So the other day Kay mentioned wanting some music while running and we started talking about ipods. Her phone can hold a microSD card for music but she uses it way to much for having it double as a music player. That was a good reason to head out for a little shopping to start off the new year to look at mp3 players and ipods. A friend of her’s was talking about an ipod and how nice it was on recent trips but at $250.00 for the low end model, well that was a little much. So we went for the nano and if video is really something she misses I can always take the nano and we’ll get and ipod for her.

Tomorrow will be the first morning she gets a chance to use it running and next week it’s off to San Diego to see a friend. That will be a good test to see how much she likes it.
